    Ratios are a starting point for a typical bag of a named variety, and rice is an agricultural product — a new harvest holds more moisture than an old one, and a wide shallow pot loses more to evaporation than a tall narrow one.     How to use this calculator

    1. Pick the grain first. Jasmine wants 1 to 1.25 on the stovetop and short-grain brown wants 1 to 2.25. That is nearly double, and it is a bigger swing than every other control on this page put together.
    2. Say what you are cooking it in. A pot vents steam for the whole simmer, a rice cooker vents less, and a sealed pressure cooker vents almost nothing. That is the entire reason the three columns differ.
    3. Say which cup you are holding. If it is the plastic one that came with the machine, pick "Rice cooker cup". It holds 180 ml, not 240, and this is the step nobody else asks about.
    4. Type the amount. The answer updates as you type. There is no Calculate button because there is nothing to wait for.
    5. Read the breakdown, not the decimal. "2.88 cups" is not a thing you can measure. "2 cups + 14 tbsp" is.

    Why this calculator is different

    Every rice calculator online models the problem the same way: water equals rice times a number that depends on the grain. That model is not wrong so much as incomplete, and the three things it leaves out are the three things that actually ruin a pot of rice.

    • It asks which cup you are measuring with. The cup that ships with a rice cooker is a Japanese , 180 ml, and every water line etched inside the inner pot is calibrated to it. A US cup is 236.59 ml. Measure the rice with the little cup and the water with a US cup and you have added 31 percent more water than you meant to. This is the single most common reason a rice cooker makes bad rice, and no other calculator mentions it.
    • The pot changes the ratio, not just the timer. A stovetop pot spends fifteen minutes losing water to steam. A sealed pressure cooker loses almost none, which is why nearly every white rice lands on a flat 1 to 1 in an Instant Pot. Most calculators give you one number and let you find that out the hard way.
    • Soaking is an input, not a footnote. Basmati soaked for half an hour wants a quarter cup less water per cup than basmati straight from the bag. There is a control for it here, and it switches itself off on the grains nobody soaks rather than pretending to work.
    • Altitude is handled instead of handed back. Water boils about a degree cooler for every 500 feet you climb, so the rice sits there longer and loses more to steam. One popular calculator's own note reads "adjust ±5% for unrinsed rice or high-altitude", which is the hard part politely returned to you. Here it is a control, and it correctly does nothing in a pressure cooker, because a pressure cooker puts the boiling point back.
    • Every number shows its working. The card lists the base ratio, what soaking took off, what elevation added, and the final figure, so you can see how the answer was built rather than trusting a black box.
    • The math is tested on every build. Twenty sourced cases plus roughly sixteen thousand generated assertions: the published anchors reproduce exactly, the ratio is provably identical across all five cup standards, soaking never pushes below 1 to 1, and no combination of grain, pot, cup and elevation can produce a negative or infinite result. If any of it drifts, the site does not deploy.

    How it works (the math)

    One published ratio per grain and pot, and two conditional adjustments. The ratio is a volume of water per volume of dry rice, which means it is dimensionless and does not change when the cup changes.

    1. The base ratio comes from the chart on our own rice to water ratio guide, which covers thirteen grains across three vessels. Those figures are cross-checked against the USA Rice Federation's published numbers, and ours are deliberately a little lower. The Federation prints 1 to 2 for long-grain white; that is calibrated for a loose or vented lid that boils off a substantial amount of water during the cook. If your lid actually seals, 1 to 2 gives you wet rice. A test asserts our stovetop figures can never exceed the published ones, so a typo that inflated one would fail the build.

    2. The soak adjustment is minus a quarter cup of water per cup of rice. That is not an estimate: it is the measured gap between soaked and unsoaked basmati in the chart, on the stovetop (1.5 to 1.25) and in a rice cooker (1.25 to 1.0). Because it was measured on one grain, it is applied only to the other long grains people actually soak, and the control disables itself on the rest. It also floors at 1 to 1, because no absorption method uses less water than that, and it does nothing at all in a pressure cooker, which is already there.

    3. The altitude adjustment is a step, not a formula. Water boils about 1°F cooler for every 500 feet of elevation, per New Mexico State University Extension, so a longer cook at a lower temperature loses more water to steam. Between 3,000 and 6,000 feet, add roughly 2 tablespoons of water per cup and 5 minutes. Above 6,000 feet, add roughly a quarter cup per cup and 10 minutes, and check the pot rather than trusting the clock. It applies to the stovetop only.

    The cup, and why it gets its own control. Zojirushi ships a 180 mL measuring cup with every rice cooker it sells and says plainly that it is "designed to work in conjunction with the water measuring lines in the cooking pan." That is a , the traditional Japanese serving unit, and it is a tenth of a shō, which is 1,800 ml. Two consequences follow. If you use the machine's cup and the machine's lines, you never need arithmetic at all, and this page will tell you so. If you mix the two systems, you are out by a quarter or a third in one direction or the other, and no amount of correct ratio arithmetic saves you.

    Limitation. Rice is an agricultural product. A new harvest holds more moisture than a bag that has been in the pantry since spring, and a wide shallow pan loses proportionally more to evaporation than a tall narrow one. Neither is an input to anything here, and neither can be. Treat these numbers as a very good first attempt, adjust by a tablespoon at a time, and write the winner on the bag.

    Three worked examples

    Two cups of long-grain white on the stovetop

    The most-searched case there is. At 1 to 1.5 that is three cups of water. Bring it to a boil uncovered, drop the heat as low as your burner will hold, cover, and leave it for fifteen minutes without lifting the lid. Then take it off the heat and let it sit, still covered, for ten more. If you have been using the 1 to 2 printed on the bag and getting sticky rice, that gap is your whole problem: the bag assumes a lid that lets steam out and yours does not.

    Jasmine in a cooker is 1 to 1.15, so two of the machine's cups need 2.3 of the same cups, which is 414 ml. But look at what the tool says when you pick that combination: your cooker's fill line marked 2 already encodes this, so measure the rice with the bundled cup, fill the water to the line, and ignore the arithmetic entirely. The calculator earns its keep in the other direction, when someone has lost the little cup, or bought a machine with an uncoated stainless inner pot that has no markings worth trusting.

    Brown long-grain is 1 to 2 at sea level with a 45 minute simmer. Above 6,000 feet that becomes 1 to 2.25 and 55 minutes, because water up there boils below 202°F and the grain needs longer at a lower temperature to soften the bran. This is the case where a rice cooker or a pressure cooker genuinely earns its money: the cooker extends its own cycle when the pot does not reach the expected temperature, and a pressure cooker puts the boiling point back into a normal range regardless of where you live. Whichever you use, rinse first with a fine mesh strainer.

    How much water for 2 cups of rice?

    For ordinary long-grain white rice on the stovetop in a pot with a lid that seals, 3 cups of water. In a rice cooker it is 2.5 cups, and in an Instant Pot it is 2 cups flat, because a sealed pot loses almost nothing to steam. If the rice is jasmine, drop the stovetop figure to 2.5 cups. If it is brown, raise it to 4. The number printed on most American bags is 1 to 2, which gives 4 cups, and that is calibrated for a vented lid rather than a sealing one.

    What is the rice to water ratio in a rice cooker?

    Slightly less than the stovetop figure, because a cooker vents less: 1 to 1.25 for long-grain white, 1 to 1.15 for jasmine and medium-grain, 1 to 1.1 for short-grain sushi rice, 1 to 1.75 for long-grain brown. The much more important answer is that if you are using the cup that came with the machine and the fill lines inside the pot, you do not need a ratio at all, because the lines are calibrated to that cup.     What is the water ratio for jasmine rice?

    1 to 1.25 on the stovetop, 1 to 1.15 in a rice cooker, 1 to 1 in a pressure cooker, with a twelve minute simmer rather than fifteen. Jasmine takes noticeably less water than other long-grains because the grain arrives with more moisture already in it, which is also why it goes gluey faster than basmati when you overshoot. Rinse it until the water runs nearly clear and do not soak it.

    What is the water ratio for basmati rice?

    1 to 1.5 straight from the bag, or 1 to 1.25 if you soak it for 30 minutes first, on the stovetop. In a rice cooker that is 1 to 1.25 unsoaked and 1 to 1 soaked. Basmati is the grain the soak control on this page was measured on. Half an hour in cold water lets the grain elongate as it cooks rather than splitting, which is the long separate grain that basmati is bought for. Drain it properly afterwards, because water clinging to the rice is water you did not measure.

    What is the water ratio for brown rice, and why is it so much higher?

    1 to 2 for long-grain brown and 1 to 2.25 for short-grain on the stovetop, at 45 and 50 minutes respectively. The bran layer is still on the grain, and water has to work through it before the starch inside can gelatinise, so brown rice needs both more water and roughly three times the time. If your brown rice keeps coming out chalky in the middle, it is almost always the time rather than the water. In an Instant Pot it drops to 1 to 1.25 with 22 minutes at pressure, which is the method we recommend in our guide to cooking brown rice in a rice cooker.

    A ratio is a workaround for a pot that cannot tell you what it is doing. Three things move the problem from managed to solved.

    • A fine mesh strainer, which is the cheapest fix on this list. Unrinsed rice cooks gluey no matter how good your ratio is, because the loose surface starch has nowhere to go.     • A cooker that reads the pot instead of a clock. Fuzzy logic models measure the temperature curve and extend the cycle when the rice is not done, which is what makes them forgiving about altitude, old rice, and a lid you opened.     • An uncoated inner pot, if yours has started shedding. Nonstick coatings on rice cooker bowls are scratched by the paddle and the rinse, and once the surface goes there is no repairing it. The stainless inner pot models trade a little convenience for a bowl that outlives the machine.
    • And keep the cup that came with the machine. It is a 180 ml and it is the only object in your kitchen that matches the lines in the pot. If it has gone missing, replacements cost about ten dollars, and buying one is easier than recalibrating every recipe you own.

    Sources & methodology

    Ratios are volume of water to volume of dry rice and are therefore independent of cup size; a test asserts that the ratio is identical across all five cup standards. The soak adjustment is the single measured basmati pair in the source chart, minus a quarter cup per cup, applied only to the long grains people soak and floored at 1 to 1. Altitude adjustments are a two-step function applied to the stovetop only, since a pressure cooker restores the boiling point and a fuzzy-logic cooker extends its own cycle. Portioning follows our own published rule of a quarter cup of dry rice per person as a side and half a cup as a main.
